The legend of William “Bull” Lowell is rooted in second chances. Lowell first introduced Indian hemp, or cannabis, to his coastal California farm in 1909. Much to his dismay, a California Board of Pharmacy member named Henry J. Finger didn’t take too kindly to the idea, as Finger’s racist beliefs influenced his negative views on cannabis. With Finger's help, the 1913 Poison Act was passed, which outlawed growing and using cannabis in the state of California. Lowell resisted by continuing his operation, but he was eventually jailed and his farm was later destroyed. However, the idea that cannabis should be available to all Californians was never destroyed. Nearly 100 years later, Lowell’s legacy was given a second chance at success.

And before they knew it, celebrity endorsements and viral marketing campaigns such as the Coachella flower crown and bud bouquets propelled Lowell into cannabis stardom.
